How I edit my pictures for Instagram

Hello, my lovelies!

In this post, we will cover:

  • Apps I use for my pictures and reels

  • Adobe Lightroom for mobile

  • Creating your own presets

  • Buying Indoora World presets

How I edit my pictures and reels

So far, I have edited all my Instagram pictures with Adobe Lightroom for mobile (free version) since it was only recently that I have subscribed to Adobe Creative Cloud. And ouch, it is unbelievably good but… expensive!

For Instagram Reels, I use the free effects from Instagram directly. First, I record the clips as Instagram Stories (with the effect already) and save them to my phone. Then, I open the Reel section and start editing the clips' length and adding the music. It is very time-consuming because Instagram doesn’t let you change the order of the clips, so if you need to make any changes, you will need to start all over again. But if you plan your reels and are familiar with the clips' sequence, then it’s not a problem, and you can achieve good results for free.

For IGTV, I have used InShot with the same procedure as for reels. I recorded the clips as Stories with the effect and then uploaded them to InShot to create the full video, add titles, etc. InShot also offers a pro version which I never used.

Adobe Lightroom for mobile

Adobe Lightroom is a free app, although you can also pay for a pro version*. You have all the necessary tools to crop and rotate your pictures and adjust the light, colours, and other effects.

You can choose free presets and profiles from the app to change the mood of your shots, as any filter would do, buy presets online or develop your own preset (style). I like the latter best since you will end up having your own unique and personal style.

I have created my own preset by adjusting all the parameters and saving them once I was satisfied. Usually, you will need to edit it again after selecting your saved preset because the pictures are taken on different days with different light conditions. But it’s a good start and saves a lot of time.

*If you are a content creator, I would not recommend paying for the pro version right at the beginning unless you want to carry out batch editing on multiple photos at the same time (copying and pasting adjustments to several pictures); use the Healing Brush or the geometry tools for correcting perspective problems. Give it a try first, get familiar with the tools and your creative process in general. Once you have some more practice taking pictures, mastered the free version and want to access more features, you can consider the premium options, either for mobile phone or desktop.

Creating your own presets

Creating presets in Adobe Lightroom is very easy. What takes us time and hard work is achieving the look we want and make sure we can apply it to any picture.

If you already have an idea of the editing style you want to have in your photos (vintage, dark, moody,

bright) you can use one of the profiles and presets available as a base and start playing with the tools until you achieve the desired look.

The main tools you can use will be grouped in Light (Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks), Color (White Balance, Temperature, Tint, Vibrance, Saturation), Effects (Texture, Clarity, Dehaze, Vignette, Grain) and Detail (Sharpening, Detail, Masking).

Once you are happy with how it looks, you can save all the adjustments under a “user preset”. Tap the three-dots icon at the upper-right corner to bring up the menu. Click on “Create Preset” and type the preset name you wish. Then you need to select which adjustments you want to save as a preset. Probably you want to select “All”, but bear in mind that the default option excludes Tools, Optics, and Geometry settings. Tap the tick mark to finish.
